Maritime Children’s Hospice is seeking committed and dynamic individuals to join our Board of Directors and help us build the first children's hospice in the Maritimes from the ground up.

About Us

The Maritimes remains one of the only regions in Canada without access to a children’s hospice. The Maritime Children’s Hospice Society is a non-profit, registered charity that was established in 2022. We are a compassionate group of health care professionals, parents and community leaders dedicated to the development, construction, and operation of a community-based children’s hospice as the hub for our Maritime pediatric palliative care program. We also aim attract healthcare professionals to our region while building awareness of the importance of pediatric palliative care in Maritime communities through education and support.

The Importance of
Pediatric Palliative Care

Pediatric palliative care is an active and total approach to care provided to children with life-limiting conditions throughout the child’s life, time of death and into grief. It includes specialized medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of serious illness for children. It is essential in improving the quality of life for both the child and their family.

Role and Responsibilities

As a member of our Board of Directors, you will:

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to ensure the hospice's mission and goals are met.

  • Advocate for the hospice within the community and help raise awareness and funds.

  • Ensure financial stability and accountability through sound governance practices.

  • Collaborate with fellow board members and MCH leadership to develop and implement policies.

  • Attend regular board meetings and participate in committee work as needed.

  • Play a crucial role in the planning, fundraising, and construction phase of the hospice.

Specific Recruitment Needs

We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise in the following areas:

  • Legal: To provide guidance on regulatory compliance, contracts, and other legal matters.

  • Accounting: To ensure financial oversight, budgeting, and fiscal responsibility.

  • Human Resources: To support the development of policies and practices that attract, retain, and develop staff.

  • Capital Fundraising: To advise efforts in securing funding necessary for the construction of the hospice.

Qualifications

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Have a strong commitment to the hospice's mission and values.

  • Possess expertise in areas such as healthcare, finance, law, fundraising, or community outreach.

  • Demonstrate leadership, strategic thinking, and collaborative skills.

  • Are willing to dedicate time and resources to support the hospice's initiatives.

  • Have previous board experience (preferred but not required).

Time Commitment

3 to 5 hours per month (board meetings, committee meetings, preparing for meetings and/or special events).

MCH is a new organization and is in a crucial planning and development stage. Directors will be required to be involved in both the development and execution of the strategic plan.
